This paper introduces a technique for robust time delay estimation (TDE) in the presence of reverberation and noise. TDE is useful in many application areas, from room acoustics to passive RADAR and SONAR. The most popular method, Generalized Cross Correlation (GCC) degrades in performance in the presence of strong reverberation. In this paper we look at a modification of a type of GCC technique – the Roth method. In the time domain version of the Roth method one sensor signal is predicted from another using a Wiener filter. We find that using the median of the group delay of this filter is a more robust TDE than the conventional approach of selecting the maximum of the absolute value of the Wiener filter coefficients.
